Community Development

Community Development at Nai Disha

At Nai Disha, our work extends beyond classrooms—we actively engage with the community to address its challenges and create meaningful change. Through direct collaboration with parents, children, and local residents, we provide guidance, raise awareness, and implement impactful initiatives that enhance the quality of life in Kishangarh, an urban village in New Delhi.

Challenges of Urban Villages Like Kishangarh

Urban villages emerge out of necessity, providing affordable housing for migrants but often lacking essential infrastructure. Some of the key challenges include:

Unplanned Growth

Narrow, congested streets with little space for public utilities.

Sanitation Issues

Irregular waste disposal and drainage problems lead to health hazards.

Limited Access to Clean Water

Many households struggle with unreliable water supply.

Unsafe Roads

Poorly maintained roads increase the risk of accidents.

Limited Access to Clean Water

Many households struggle with unreliable water supply.

Recognizing these challenges, Nai Disha has developed community-driven projects that directly address these issues, ensuring sustainable improvements in health, education, and the environment.

Transforming Communities Through Action

Swachhta Project – From Waste Dump to Community Space

In line with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, we converted a hazardous garbage dumping ground into a safe and thriving community hub. Previously a site for disease, gambling, and substance abuse, this area is now a vibrant playground where over 400 children engage in sports, morning assemblies, and physical education. More than 500 families joined hands to clear the land and implement waste management systems, ensuring its long-term upkeep.

Eco-Brick Initiative – Tackling Plastic Waste

Plastic pollution is a growing concern in urban villages. Our Eco-Brick Initiative educates children on responsible plastic disposal by repurposing waste into sustainable bricks. These eco-friendly bricks are then used to create benches and stools, promoting environmental awareness and community involvement.

Plant a Tree Drive – Greening Kishangarh

Environmental sustainability is at the core of our work. We distributed 440 saplings to 240 children, instilling a sense of responsibility for nature. Today, these children continue to nurture their trees, contributing to a greener and healthier neighborhood.

Community Engagement & Awareness Campaigns

Through outreach activities, our students raise awareness about sanitation, waste management, and health issues in the community. Key initiatives include:

Leading by Example

Children actively clean streets and educate residents on the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Waste Management Education

Local ragpickers and women are trained in proper waste segregation and disposal.

Health Awareness

Campaigns educate families on hygiene, mosquito breeding prevention, and vector-borne diseases.

Workshops & Legal Awareness Programs

We conduct workshops and counseling sessions to inform residents about their legal rights, government schemes, and essential documentation such as Aadhar cards and bank accounts. Legal experts also educate the community on Child Rights and Child Protection Policies, empowering both parents and children.

1

Education Advocacy – Ensuring School Enrollment

Education is a pathway out of poverty, yet many children in urban villages struggle with access to schooling. Our team conducts home visits and individual counseling to:

  • Encourage school enrollment and assist families with the admission process.

2

Hole-in-the-Wall – Digital Learning for All

Bridging the digital divide, Nai Disha, in partnership with ATC India, has installed two shared public computers outside our center. These self-learning stations help children aged 6-14 develop skills in English, Mathematics, and basic computing, making digital education accessible to all.

3

Helpline for Children of Alcoholic Parents – Allanteen

Growing up in households affected by alcoholism can have severe emotional and psychological effects on children. Through Allanteen, we provide:

  • A safe space for emotional support and counseling.
  • Guidance on coping mechanisms to manage stress and improve self-esteem.
  • Practical strategies to foster stability in difficult home environments.

At Nai Disha, every initiative is driven by community needs. We believe that empowering individuals—through education, environmental responsibility, and legal awareness—creates stronger, healthier, and more self-sufficient communities.

Why Community Development at Nai Disha Stands Out

Revitalizing Public Spaces

Swachhta Project

Once a hazardous dumping ground, this site now buzzes with life as a safe playground for 400+ children. Local families united to clear waste and set up sustainable management systems—proving what collective action can achieve.

Turning Waste into Wealth

Eco‑Brick Initiative

Plastic trash becomes durable bricks, which students then craft into benches and stools. This hands‑on program teaches environmental responsibility while beautifying the neighborhood.

Cultivating Green Guardians

Plant a Tree Drive

Over 240 children received saplings and ongoing mentorship. Today, those young stewards proudly tend to their trees, breathing new life into Kishangarh’s streets.

Empowering Through Education & Awareness

Outreach Campaigns

From street‑cleaning drives to 3R workshops (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), residents learn best practices in sanitation and waste segregation. Health‑focused sessions on hygiene and mosquito control further safeguard community well‑being.

Workshops & Legal Clinics

Parents and children gain vital insights into government schemes, documentation (Aadhar, bank accounts), and child protection rights—arming them with tools to claim their entitlements.

Bridging Digital Divides

Hole‑in‑the‑Wall

Two self‑learning computer kiosks offer free access to English, math, and computing lessons—opening doors to digital literacy for ages 6–14

Supporting Vulnerable Families

Allanteen Helpline

Children of alcoholic parents find a safe haven for counseling, stress‑management strategies, and peer support—ensuring emotional resilience in challenging home environments.
